How this place is governed
Which number do I call?
Jacksonville and Duval County have been one government since consolidation in 1968. The mayor, the sheriff, the tax collector, the property appraiser, and the supervisor of elections are countywide offices. City Hall at the St. James Building and the Duval County Courthouse are part of that same system.
Four communities inside Duval kept their own city halls: Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, Jacksonville Beach, and the Town of Baldwin. They elect their own boards. They are not represented by a Jacksonville City Council district. The three beach cities run their own police departments. For a fire, a crime in progress, or a medical emergency, call 911 anywhere. The dispatcher sends the agency that covers that address.
Clay and St. Johns are not Jacksonville
Orange Park, Fleming Island, Middleburg, Green Cove Springs, Lakeside, and Asbury Lake are Clay County. Ponte Vedra, Palm Valley, and Nocatee are St. Johns County, even when a shipping label says Jacksonville. Their sheriff, school district, tax collector, and county water department are not the City of Jacksonville. County offices for St. Johns sit in St. Augustine. Clay’s sit in Green Cove Springs.
State legislators follow the street
A Jacksonville ZIP can contain more than one Florida Senate district and more than one Florida House district. Use the Senate’s address search and the House’s address search. Neither one follows a neighborhood name.
A ZIP code is not a city limit
32073 covers parts of Orange Park, Fleming Island, and Lakeside. 32043 is used in both Green Cove Springs and Asbury Lake. 32068 is shared by Middleburg, Asbury Lake, and Lakeside. Use a ZIP to get close, then confirm the office on its own website. To find a Jacksonville council member, use the city’s district search, not the ZIP.
Power is not one company
Most of consolidated Jacksonville, including electric service in Atlantic Beach, is JEA. Beaches Energy serves Jacksonville Beach and other customers in Duval and St. Johns. Clay Electric Cooperative serves much of Clay County. It is not the same company as Clay County Electric in Arkansas. Some addresses are Florida Power & Light. The name on the bill is the only company that can see the outage.
Trash day is an address, not a neighborhood
Inside consolidated Jacksonville, city crews, Meridian Waste, and Waste Pro cover different streets. Set carts out by 6 a.m., and no earlier than 5 p.m. the day before. Look the address up in the city’s Waste Wizard instead of guessing from a ZIP. Report a missed pickup to 630-CITY. Atlantic Beach and Jacksonville Beach run their own sanitation.
Who to call applies these lines to the city you pick. You do not need to know the neighborhood. Trash day opens the Waste Wizard. The storm page and the fridge sheet are the numbers to keep when the website will not load.
